Topje

Have you got an old scarf laying around? An odd skein of cotton yarn that you don’t know what to do? Well this is what you can turn them into: a lovely summer top with crochet yoke and edging.
One of the advantages of crocheting over knitting is the speed, and what’s even more faster than doing a whole top is to just crochet part of it, and leave the rest to a pretty floral fabric, which can be a scarf, a skirt or a top in a light weight material.
The construction is pretty simple: 3 granny squares make up the yoke, and 2 triangles the neckline. I improvised the square and the triangle, once I was happy with how the the lacy pattern turned out, then it worked up pretty quickly. The squares and triangles are joined together as they are crocheted, which means no sewing and a lot less ends to weave in.
The bodice is made from 2 pieces of rectangle, which was cut from a scarf, and an elastic band is used at the top hem to give the perfect fitting around the chest, also an A-line shape to the top. Then you sew the crochet yoke to the bodice, add a crochet edging to the bottom hem - voila! Instant satisfaction!
I used machine to do the sewing, the stitches are pretty much invisible and disappear into the crochet stitches, but of course you can always sew for hand. The simple construction of the bodice plus the elastic band means that you can be rather flexible with the material to be used, also the finished measurements.
It took me more time to produce the crochet charts than the actually crocheting and sewing though - but the pattern becomes easier to grasp when you can see the stitches in clear illustrations. Now the written pattern with charts for my Keila top can be downloaded as a free pdf here. :)
